ELEPAP of Thessaloniki adopts and uses the latest technology in rehabilitation and evaluation techniques for persons with disabilities.
Equipment

  • The 2 KISTLER force platforms use piezoelectric sensors. These platforms measure the three orthogonal components of the forces in the three coordinate axes.
  • 2 EMG Devices (BTS FREEEMG) which represent a generation leap in diagnostic device technology for surface dynamic electromyography analysis, based entirely on wireless technologies.
  • 1 EMG Device (BTS POCKETEMG)
  • Software (SMART-Clinic) which allows the user to evaluate synchronized information to obtain an objective data based report.

Physical Examination

A detailed physical examination is performed by the laboratory’s physiotherapist that includes measurement of:

  • Joint range of motion (angle measurement)
  • Strength (Oxford Scale)
  • Muscle tone (Asworth Scale)

Physical Examination

Standard Video Analysis
Various walking conditions (that need orthotics and/or assistive devices) are videotaped for a permanent visual record of changes in the patient’s gait pattern. Typically, the patient wears a bathing suit so that all joint motion is visible.
 

Balance Analysis
During balance analysis the Centre of Pressure and other variables are recorded and combined with electromyography and kinematics that provide useful information about the adopted posture strategies.     
 

3D Kinematic Analysis
Six high-speed video cameras simultaneously record the movement of the trunk and extremities as the patient walks. These views are merged to construct a three-dimensional (3D) model which is then used to calculate joint motion in each of the three planes. The data can be represented in graph form to show the dynamic range of motion during gait.

Kinetic Analysis
Force plates located in the floor of the testing space measure the three-dimensional torque and power generated by each foot strike. The direction and magnitude of the ground reaction forces on the lower extremities can be calculated during the different phases of the gait cycle.

Diagnostic Electromyography
Surface electrodes are applied to the skin to collect muscle activity data. This data is synchronized with the kinematics’ data so that the muscle activity patterns can be analyzed for each phase of gait.
